Why do I see an error stating: "Could not create "." - unzip operation cancelled." when starting the MATLAB R2014a installer on Windows?

When launching the MATLAB R2014a installer on Windows, the Windows Self-Extractor fails with an error stating "Could not create "." - unzip operation cancelled." How can I resolve this issue?

This error can occur if you are attempting to run the installer from the root of a drive on Windows, for example, C:\ or E:\. This error can be resolved by moving the installer to a directory other than the root directory of the drive, such as your desktop.
