Why am I unable to use Simulink smart editing features (e.g., quick insert, single-select actions, etc.) when editing my Simulink Model?

When editing my Simulink model in R2017a, I usually have the ability to use smart editing features such as inserting blocks by double clicking the canvas or editing blocks by clicking three dots that appear when the block is selected. For some reason, I can no longer use these features. How can I restore this functionality?

You may have smart editing features disabled. To restore functionality, follow the steps below:

1. Open Simulink Preferences (File > Simulink Preferences). 
2. Click on the Editor Pane to see Editor specific preferences. 
3. If unchecked, check the “Enable smart editing features” box to restore the commands.
