Why do I receive an Error 510 when installing or activating MATLAB?

After entering my Activation Key the installer gives me the following error:
Error 510: No licenses were found for the activation key entered

If you see the screen below with no option other than to enter an Activation Key, then this means your MathWorks Account is not linked to any licenses. 
  • If a License Administrator provided you with an Activation Key that results in this error, contact your License Administrator to verify that the Activation Key is correct. It is possible that they provided you instead with a File Installation Key, which is used for offline installations or for installing when you do not have a MathWorks Account.

If you purchased MATLAB Student License, then your Activation Key would have been emailed to you. If it was not, then contact sales@mathworks.com or call Mathworks for free installation support.
If you purchased any other kind of MATLAB license then those would use license numbers rather than activation keys.
If you are using an license supplied by an organization, including licenses supplied by universities, then they are responsible for providing you with the necessary keys.
