Associate .mat, .m files with most recent Matlab

18 views (last 30 days)
I want to change .mat and .m files to open the most recent version of MATLAB on my Windows computer.
When I go to the Set Associations window through Control Panel, select .mat, click "Change Program..." another window "Open with" opens showing only Matlab R2017a and Microsoft Access as "Recommended Programs". No Matlab programs are in the "Other Programs" list. Since I want to associate with R2017b, I click "Browse" and then select C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2017b\bin\matlab.exe and click "Open" on the bottom of this window.
When I go back to the Set Associations window, it still shows Matlab R2017a.
This happens also when I select C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2017b\bin\win64\MATLAB.exe
How do I get the association to the new version?

A File Exchange has been created to automatically handle these file associations.
Please download the file at the following link:
Once downloaded, run the script and then a REG-file will be created. Outside of MATLAB double click on the REG-file to run it. This will fix your associations for MAT and M-files. Please note: This file exchange was created for an earlier version of MATLAB so there may be some inconsistencies.
