Why do I receive a "problem executing post-install actions" error in my installer log file when installing a support package?

When installing a support package, the following error appears:
ERROR: There was a problem installing the support package. To resolve this issue, contact Technical Support.
Looking at my MATLAB installer log file, I see the following error:
ERROR: There was a problem executing post-install actions for package with basecode <support_package_basecode>
How can I proceed past this error and install my support package?

This error typically occurs as the result of a previously corrupt support package installation which is hindering this new installation. To clear out the old files, you can perform a clean reinstallation of your support package by following these steps:
