Why do two license manager (lmgrd.exe) processes appear when I start the network license manager as a service?

When I start the MATLAB License Server service, I notice that two license manager processes (lmgrd.exe) appear in the Windows Task Manager.

This is expected behavior when using FLEXnet 10.8 and higher. When you start the license manager (lmgrd.exe), the process checks to see if it is starting as a service. If it is starting as a service, the license manager process spawns another lmgrd.exe process. If you start the network license manager as an application, only one lmgrd.exe process starts.
