In MATLAB 6.5 (R13) why do Java windows sometimes come up smaller than they should?

This problem seems to be related to the use of the Ximian Gnome window manager. Similar behaviour has also been seen with Sawfish, twm, and WindowMaker.
For example, the preference dialog box sometimes comes up undersized, and cannot be resized. Also, GUIDE sometimes comes up as very small box, and cannot be resized. This only seems to occur the first time these components are created in a given session. After that they open up fine with the correct size.

This bug has been fixed in Release 14 Service Pack 3 (R14SP3). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:
As a workaround, you may want to consider using a different window manager to see if this resolves or improves the situation.
